A useful fit for

A qualified Thunderbolt workstation that needs many ordinary data connections, high-rate wired networking and up to 140 W of laptop charging.

The main tradeoff

Ordinary 5/10 Gbps USB-C hosts and Thunderbolt 3 Windows hosts are excluded. Windows Ethernet needs the documented driver, and USB4 requires positive PCIe tunneling support.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a supported M2 Pro use five 10 Gbps USB-A ports, five dedicated 10 Gbps USB-C ports and two 4K 60 Hz displays?

Yes, in the documented Thunderbolt Mac arrangement. Screens use DisplayPort plus Type-C, or both downstream Type-C ports. The five dedicated USB-C data ports remain separate.

Does a Windows arrangement using the built-in network satisfy a no-extra-driver requirement?

No. CalDigit expressly requires the 10 Gb Ethernet driver on Windows. That complete networking arrangement cannot be marked as requiring no installation.

Can an ordinary DP 1.4 USB-C host use the complete dock and its 140 W charging arrangement?

No supported arrangement is established. CalDigit expressly excludes ordinary 5/10 Gbps USB-C hosts for TS5 Plus. A fitting Type-C plug does not prove compatibility.

The CalDigit TS5 Plus suits a supported high-capability desk that needs many ordinary USB sockets, a built-in 10 Gb Ethernet connection, simultaneous SD and microSD readers and up to 140 W of laptop charging. Its current exact specification lists five dedicated USB-A and five dedicated USB-C data ports, plus two downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports and DisplayPort. It is a poor fit for an ordinary 5 or 10 Gbps USB-C host, which CalDigit explicitly excludes.

Start with the actual host and the required software

The dock supports the documented Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 Mac and USB4 arrangements. Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs are expressly unsupported. Its minimum system requirements include macOS 15 or newer or Windows 11 or newer, with additional Windows processor, firmware and PCIe conditions. A Type-C connector by itself does not establish any of these requirements.

PCIe tunneling matters for USB4 hosts. CalDigit connects both the onboard network function and its second USB controller to that qualification. Confirm the computer's actual support before relying on the full dock configuration. A generic USB4 label should not silently be treated as proof that every optional host function is present.

Windows users must install the documented 10 Gb Ethernet driver. That is material if the computer is managed or a no-installation arrangement is essential. The manual also describes accessory approval through the operating system, while CalDigit's macOS ejection utility and SuperDrive driver serve their own optional functions. Those separate requirements should not be collapsed into one blanket “driver free” claim.

Map the USB sockets and the display sockets separately

The current interface list contains five 10 Gbps USB-A sockets and five dedicated 10 Gbps USB-C sockets. Those dedicated USB-C data connections do not carry display video. Two downstream Thunderbolt 5 sockets accept supported displays and peripherals, while another Thunderbolt socket is occupied by the host cable.

The front high-power USB-C socket and both downstream Thunderbolt sockets can supply up to 36 W to suitable accessories. That can be useful for an attached device with a higher charging allowance, but it is separate from the laptop's up-to-140 W connection. Other dedicated USB sockets have their own power limits, so do not assign 36 W to every Type-C-shaped port.

CalDigit describes two USB controllers rather than a single controller shared by all ordinary USB devices. That is a meaningful architecture distinction for a desk with several demanding accessories, subject to the documented host qualification. It is not a measured promise that several SSDs will copy at their individual advertised maximums simultaneously. The ordinary USB sockets are specified at 10 Gbps; the dock's Thunderbolt bandwidth does not establish USB Gen 2x2 at 20 Gbps.

Use a supported simultaneous screen arrangement

One display can use the built-in DisplayPort 2.1 connector. Further screens use downstream Thunderbolt connections, directly for compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt monitors, or through appropriate separate adapters. HDMI conversion from the DisplayPort output requires an active adapter. Native HDMI sockets are not built into this dock.

CalDigit distinguishes base M1/M2 single-screen limits, compatible base M3 closed-lid arrangements and the named Pro, Max, Ultra and newer base M4/M5 systems. Current documentation supports three displays on appropriate M5 Pro and M5 Max hosts, and up to four on M5 Max. The fourth screen requires a suitable Thunderbolt daisy chain and appropriate monitor behavior. Four screens are not four directly available display sockets.

Supported Thunderbolt 5 Windows computers have a documented triple-display route, whereas Thunderbolt 4 Windows hosts do not gain native triple-screen support. Higher resolutions and refresh rates depend on the host GPU, monitor support and any required compression. Begin with the exact host and required independent desktops in the setup finder, then verify the entire display route. Each screen using a downstream Type-C socket also occupies that socket for the purposes of connecting another separate device.

Match the network and power system to the desk

The built-in Ethernet interface has a 10 Gb link ceiling and can connect to lower-rate compatible networks. Faster networking still needs suitable equipment at the other end and an appropriate host path; this specification is not a measured internet or NAS transfer speed. Ordinary USB-C hosts are excluded altogether, and USB4 hosts need the documented PCIe support.

The front SD and microSD readers support UHS-II and can operate at the same time. For a desk that repeatedly uses both card formats, they can remove separate readers and cables. The front audio combination jack takes priority over the rear audio outputs when both are connected, so the audio connections should not be treated as independent simultaneous playback destinations.

The package includes a 330 W supply, power cord, rubber feet and a detachable 1 m braided Thunderbolt 5 cable. Allow space for the supply and cable routing as well as the dock body. The host charging ceiling is 140 W, not 330 W, and desktop Macs remain self-powered. For a smaller USB4 hub with a different set of native video connectors, compare the separately documented Anker 556 A83A8; its host, charging and Mac display restrictions need their own assessment.

Host requirementsUse a supported Thunderbolt 5 or 4 host, a supported Thunderbolt 3 Mac or a qualified USB4/v2 system. Ordinary 5/10 Gbps USB-C hosts and Thunderbolt 3 Windows hosts are excluded. PCIe tunneling is required for the complete dock, including networking and its second USB controller.
Screen arrangementOne DisplayPort 2.1 output and two downstream Thunderbolt ports provide the display routes. The five dedicated USB-C ports are for data. Exact chip, lid and display-stream conditions apply. An M5 Max four-screen arrangement requires a qualifying Thunderbolt monitor chain, rather than four direct dock outputs.
Power and chargingThe included 330 W supply is required. The host ceiling is 140 W. Each downstream Thunderbolt port and the designated front USB-C accessory port offer up to 36 W; other dedicated USB-C ports offer up to 7.5 W. Desktop Ultra systems use their own supplies.
Data and device limitsFive USB-A ports and five dedicated USB-C data ports support up to 10 Gbps. The two downstream Thunderbolt ports accept supported USB-C devices, but their ordinary USB rates are not inferred from the 80/120 Gbps transport rating. The second USB controller requires Thunderbolt or a USB4 host with PCIe support.
InstallationThe exact US package includes a detachable 1 m braided Thunderbolt 5 cable, rubber feet, a power cord and the 330 W PA-1331-24 supply. The standalone body supports vertical or horizontal desktop placement.
