Five functions for media and cards

The Elago Aluminum Type-C Pocket Pro Hub is useful for a USB-C tablet whose missing connections are HDMI, wired audio and memory cards. Its five listed functions are an HDMI output, USB-C PD charging input, 3.5mm audio socket, SD slot and microSD slot. It does not add an ordinary USB-A socket for a keyboard or flash drive. That is the most important distinction when comparing it with other five-function hubs.

The manufacturer recommends the design primarily for a tablet or smartphone. Its compatibility list specifically names the 2018 iPad Pro, MacBook and MacBook Pro, alongside several Samsung Galaxy phones. It explicitly excludes 2017 and earlier iPad models. Check the actual device and connector rather than assuming that every iPad uses the same physical or video arrangement.

Desktop and iPad video are separate claims

Elago advertises a maximum 4K60 output for desktop use and a separate 2K60 ceiling for iPad Pro. Those should not be combined into a universal 4K60 iPad claim. The retained page does not provide the pixel dimensions behind the iPad “2K” label, so this review does not silently equate it with a particular QHD computer-monitor format.

The HDMI connection also has an explicit direct-HDMI-to-HDMI requirement. Plan an appropriate HDMI cable and monitor connection instead of assuming that a chain of video adapters is part of the supported arrangement. There is one HDMI output, which does not establish two independent external displays. The source does not identify an exact host DisplayPort revision.

The tablet's own display capabilities and the application determine how the external screen is used. A video output ceiling describes what the adapter can carry in a suitable setup; it does not make every tablet app provide a separate desktop or the same playback behavior. That is particularly relevant when choosing the hub for a presentation or media workflow.

Cards are its data expansion

The SD and microSD slots provide direct access to card media. That can be more convenient than a separate reader when the tablet's single USB-C socket also needs to serve the display and charging arrangement. The retained specification does not establish a particular card-reader line rate, maximum card capacity or simultaneous access to both slots.

Do not count those slots as ordinary USB peripheral sockets. A USB-A drive cannot plug directly into an SD slot, and the USB-C PD input is not documented as a USB-C data output. If connecting a keyboard, mouse or external USB storage device is the main task, choose a hub whose actual layout includes the required accessory-data sockets.

Charging without an invented wattage

The USB-C PD input supports charging a connected compatible device while the hub's other functions are used. Elago does not give a numeric input ceiling or a separate maximum delivered to the host in the retained description. A basic documented charging function therefore has a clearer basis than a firm request for a specific number of watts at the tablet or notebook.

The page uses power-bank language around iPad use, but it does not establish that the hub contains a battery or can supply power independently. Plan an appropriate external charging source for a powered setup. A small aluminum enclosure and a PD label are not evidence of stored energy.

Keep the exact Elago model distinct

This Pocket Pro Hub is a separate identified product from Elago's older ECA-USBC2-HB-SL multiport lead. Their specifications should not be mixed just because both are aluminum USB-C adapters. Choose Pocket Pro for its supported tablet media and card arrangement. Choose another model when USB-A accessories, simultaneous card transfers or an explicitly guaranteed notebook charging wattage determines the decision.
