JUH470Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Choose it for a documented older USB-A computer when you can prepare the Ethernet driver and appropriate accessory power.

The main tradeoff

No video, cards or laptop charging; the original Windows/Mac arrangement requires a driver despite broad plug-and-play wording.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I add three USB-A data ports and Gigabit Ethernet to a USB-A computer?

Yes, within the documented host and OS setup. The USB interface is advertised 5 Gbps; Ethernet and peripherals share the upstream path.

Can I use the listed Windows configuration if I am allowed to install its network driver?

Yes. The original guide requires preparing the driver before connecting the adapter; the optional hub supply is separate.

Is the documented older Mac networking arrangement guaranteed to need no extra driver?

No. The original Mac setup explicitly includes installing the Ethernet driver, so it does not meet that essential requirement.

j5create JUH470 review: Ethernet and three USB data ports for a USB-A computer

The JUH470 is a straightforward way to give a USB-A computer both a wired network connection and three additional USB-A data sockets. It is useful when a compact laptop has no Ethernet socket and too few places for a keyboard, mouse or drive. It does not add a monitor output or a computer-charging connection.

Its main buying qualification is software. Although the product page uses plug-and-play language, the original JUH470 installation guide explicitly requires a driver for the older Windows and Mac configurations it describes. A reader who cannot install software on a work computer should not treat this model as universally driver-free.

The USB-A host is a deliberate part of the design

The upstream connector is a USB 3.0 Type-A male plug on the attached cable. You do not need USB-C video support, Thunderbolt or DisplayPort Alternate Mode to use the hub’s documented functions. Instead, the computer needs an appropriate USB-A port and a supported operating environment.

The three downstream USB 3.0 sockets are advertised at up to 5 Gbps. They can accommodate familiar accessories, while the Ethernet connection uses the same upstream computer connection. The rate does not mean that three storage devices plus Ethernet each receive a separate full-speed link. Actual transfers depend on the computer, connected devices and concurrent traffic.

The attached cable is listed at 14.5 cm, approximately 5.7 inches. This is convenient close to a laptop but may be restrictive if the only computer port is behind a desktop or far below the work surface. Consider where the hub body and network cable will sit before assuming a short-cable adapter will tidy the desk.

Gigabit Ethernet is a link capability

The RJ45 socket supports 10, 100 and 1000 Mbps Ethernet. It can provide a wired connection where Wi-Fi is unavailable or unsuitable. It does not by itself guarantee faster internet, lower latency or uninterrupted service. The router or switch, network cable, service and software configuration remain part of the outcome.

The manufacturer lists network features including Wake on LAN, VLAN-related functions, jumbo frames and checksum offload. Those are useful specifications for a compatible managed arrangement, not a reason to expect every network feature to be active automatically. For an ordinary buyer, obtaining the right driver and seeing the expected Ethernet connection in system settings comes first.

Plan software installation before relying on the network

The original guide instructs older Windows and Mac users to install the driver before connecting the adapter. It describes downloading the appropriate software or using the included driver CD, then restarting and connecting the network cable. On the Mac configuration shown, the network device is identified as AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet.

A modern computer may not have an optical drive, and a machine with no working network connection cannot download a driver through this adapter until setup is complete. Prepare the correct software through an existing connection or another permitted method. On an organization-managed computer, confirm that installation is allowed before buying.

The manufacturer’s published system list covers specific older Windows, macOS and Linux versions. It is not a blanket compatibility statement for every later operating system or Mac chip. This review preserves that scope rather than turning an old general Mac label into proof for all current machines.

Optional hub power is different from laptop charging

The JUH470 can operate from USB bus power or through a separate 5 V DC source. The product specifies a barrel connection with 3.5 mm outer and 1.35 mm inner diameter and points to the optional JUH4AC supply. The reviewed package lists the adapter, guide and driver CD, not an included external power adapter.

For high-power accessories, the manufacturer recommends using the device’s own supply or the suitable optional hub source. The original guide gives a particularly conservative power-advice threshold, so this is not a product to treat as unrestricted bus power for several drives. Matching a barrel plug’s dimensions alone is also insufficient; use a correctly specified source.

That external power serves the hub and accessories. There is no USB-C PD input or route for charging the host laptop through this USB-A connection. A separate laptop charger remains necessary. The distinction matters when comparing a powered data hub with a larger docking station.

The right reason to choose the JUH470

Choose it for a documented compatible USB-A computer needing Ethernet and three ordinary USB data connections, particularly when you can prepare its software and accessory-power arrangement. Its small aluminum body and attached cable suit a portable setup with modest peripherals.

Choose another model for USB-C-only computers, monitor outputs, card reading, laptop charging or an expressly guaranteed no-extra-driver requirement. For this adapter, the useful combination is networking plus peripheral expansion, with driver and power preparation included in the decision.
